Mad Scientist

Mad Scientist

In the end of 2007 I went to Sapporo, north of Japan and met with a biologist at Hokkaido University. We did some test experiments to determine whether it was possible or not to use our tiny micro robots in mixed society experiments. I wrapped some robots in paper and he chopped a head of a male cricket so that we could deceive other real crickets into thinking the robot is one of their kind (because of pheromones in the head). The crickets were deceived but a bit confused, because although the cricket was a male, and the head on the robot was also a head of a male, he started a courtship behavior instead of fighting like one would expect when two male crickets encounter each other. At the end of pheromone looses strength and the crickets get hungry, so they ate the heads that were on the robots, chopping out bites as if these were apples.

Long Way Back Home

Long Way Back Home

In January of 2008, after spending Christmas and the new year with our family in Brazil the journey back to Japan became one of our worst nightmares ever. POA -> SP -> Washington -> San Francisco -> San Jose -> San Francisco -> Los Angeles -> Seoul -> Osaka. In total we spent over 60 hours between airplanes and airport gates, not being able to lie down and sleep properly. We were actually supposed to take a flight to Osaka from San Francisco but due to a strong storm the our airplane wasn't able to land properly so we landed in San Jose and had to wait inside the aircraft until they moved back to San Francisco, thus loosing the connection and ending up in South Korea! This picture was taken in San Jose, after a pretty scary unsuccessful attempt to land in San Francisco. While we where waiting the pilot decided say "hello" to the passengers in the corridor. He saw a little kid with his mom waiting in the line for the toilet and asked if they wanted to see the cockpit. The mom angry replied she just wanted food and go home because they were tired. Listening to that I decided to ask if I could see the cabin, and take a picture -- meaning a picture of him, the pilot at his seat. He missunderstood me, took the camera from my hands and let me sit there. So much for all the anti-terror security craziness. On the way out my head bump in some controls on the ceiling, which made me a bit concerned. Overall, the storm just made what was already horrible even worse. They kept terrorizing us saying that they were overbooked and that there was be no place for all. Our luggage only arrived about four days later. After that we promised ourselves we would never ever take United Airlines again, and also avoid all other American companies.

One Day Robot

This is a balancing robot that I made together with two friends of mine in less than 24 hours. Daniel Quevedo helped in the external shell design and Henning Spille helped in the assembly of the electronics and mechanics inside. Actually later we still spent over a week fixing design mistakes in the electronics and elsewhere and unfortunately the motors were not strong enough. I kind of liked the external shell we came up with. :-)

Fun Game

At the kindergarten where my wife works they had what they call undokai, roughtly translated to "exercise day". There the children are divided into teams and they play some games with their parents. I got this shot of a kid really "enjoying" the ride with his mom.

The Tempozan Ferris wheel is one of the largest in the world, standing 112.5 meters above the ground. Located in Osaka near the Kaiyukan Aquarium, it was opened to public in 1997. During the 17-minute ride, it offers a view of Osaka Bay and surrounding areas, such as Ikoma Mountains to the east, Akashi Strait Pearl Bridge to the west, Kansai International Airport to the south, and Rokko Mountains to the north.

We had a narrow view of the fireworks from this small park in Ikeda. I decided it would be better to capture the mood instead of just the fireworks themselves.

This was taken from a bridge during the Tenjin Matsuri, a summer boat parade that happens near Midosuji, Osaka. I like the reflex of the lights in the river. The parade had already almost finished when I took this picture, but I am actually not sure if that was really the last boat.
