cartonero and... cart |
by misscarina |
I have been trying to get a picture of a horse and cart for days weeks. I hear about five (no lie) pass by on the street everyday, but it's always way too late by the time I get my camera. Anyways, my dad went to the grocery store the other day, and as he was walking down the street, he saw a cartonero pull up on our street and park his horse and cart in front of our house! So he called me on the Nextel and told me so I could take my long-awaited-for photo. I wish I could have gotten closer (this was taken from right inside our door), but the cartonero was right there and I didn't want to be rude. Anyways, I guess I should briefly explain what a cartonero is. Basically, they're just people who collect cardboard and newspapers from the street or ones that people throw out and then sell it by the kilo to manufacturers and companies who can find a use for it (for what I'm not sure). Carton is the Spanish word for cardboard. So a cartonero is someone who "cardboards" (in this case, collects cardboard). I suppose they use horses instead of cars for practical reasons. This man didn't seem to be doing to badly economically. I have seen some cartoneros pulling a cart themselves.
